Art and Design at Donisthorpe

At Donisthorpe Primary School, we value and are dedicated to the teaching of Art and Design. We see this as a fundamental part of school life. Art and Design provides the children with the opportunities to develop and extend skills and an opportunity to express their individual interests, thought and ideas.

We are committed to providing an ‘Arts Rich Curriculum’ for our children. We aim to engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress, they should become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques and evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design. Children will be introduced to a range of works and develop knowledge of the styles and vocabulary used by famous artists.

In Art and Design, children are expected to be reflective and evaluate their work, thinking about how they can make changes and keep improving. This should be meaningful and continuous throughout the process, with evidence of age-related verbal and written refection. Children are encouraged to take risks and experiment and then reflect on why some ideas and techniques are successful or not for a particular project.
