Everyone Belongs

We teach 'Everyone Belongs' as part of our commitment to promoting equality and diversity in all aspects of school life.

'Everyone Belongs' is a whole school approach that uses resources and a framework to teach children about equality and diversity, in line with British Values, Ofsted guidelines and the Equality Act (2010).

'Everyone Belongs' uses storybooks, lesson plans and assemblies to create and support the development of a whole school community that embraces and celebrates all forms of difference. The school holds detailed plans about how this is taught. ​

Protected Characteristics

It is important that all children gain an understanding of the world they are growing up in, and learn how to live alongside, and show respect for, a diverse range of people.

The Equality Act 2010, identifies the ‘protected characteristics’ as:

• age
• disability
• gender reassignment
• pregnancy and maternity
• race
• religion or belief
• sex
• sexual orientation

At Donisthorpe, we are committed to preparing our children for life in the diverse society, which is modern Britain today. We are proud to be an open and inclusive school, which embraces equality and diversity - something that is strongly reflected in our vision, values and ethos.

In order to enable us to further promote an ethos of inclusion and tolerance, we have decided to introduce ‘Everyone Belongs’ into our PSHE lessons. This is a programme is inspired by the ‘No Outsiders’ scheme and the Local Authority’s ‘Everyone’s Welcome’ scheme, that is used in some other trust schools. We have adapted this approach to best meet the needs of the children who attend Donisthorpe Primary School.

At Ashby Hill Top, we pride ourselves on having a well-considered approach to the teaching of the protected characteristics, in order to:

• eliminate discrimination, harassment, victimisation
• advance equality of opportunity between persons who share a relevant protected characteristic and persons who do not share it
• foster good relations between persons who share a relevant protected characteristic and persons who do not share it

​This philosophy is an integral part of school life and is embedded into our curriculum. In addition to this planned approach, we react and respond to any incident as it arises within school, the community or is in the news.
