Building character in schools involves creating a supportive environment where children can develop the skills they need to be responsible citizens, to be compassionate, and confident.
Character Education has always been an important part of the curriculum at Donisthorpe Primary School. We have discussed with the children the most effective behaviours needed to ensure that they will be successful in school and in life. We have created a bank of character vocabulary that it is easy for all children to understand and is progressive across the school. Our school has three simple rules: ‘Be Ready, Be Respectful, Be Safe’, these are applicable to a wide variety of situations. These rules, and our characteristics of effective learning are displayed in each classroom and are explicitly taught and modelled by all members of our school community. We take every opportinuty to teach children about these character traits and how to practice them in their daily lives. This includes during assemblies, in lessons, through sports, clubs and more. These skills are explicitly taught as the children progress through the school.
